Milena Schiano Lab

Milena Schiano studies as a painter at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Rome, from which she leaves in 2010 in order to establish the HUB26 studio: laboratory, atelier, and place where young Roman artists could meet and experiment together.
Milena Schiano, initially, focused on paintings, installations, and photography – for her search on the birth of individual identity, gender culture, female history, and the role of memories, especially in light of the new neuroscience theories on the birth of the mind.
She learns to weave and to build looms, and she rest arts to sew, as they taught her when she was a child. Sewing, she creates giant canvas to paint on, and then, still sewing, she builds the artwork “a Room of One’s Own”. She creates rudimentary looms for weaving, making them environmental installations.
In 2015 she learns to work with clay, spending time with several Roman ceramists.

Alongside Martha Pachon Rodriguez, at the Faenza Art Ceramic Center, she starts working on porcelain, and she studies the glaze technique at the Central St. Martin in London.
The opportunities that ceramics can offer fascinate her. The ductility, the plasticity, and the sensuality of surfaces, the magic of the glazes, allow her to return to her female world with new and renewed expertise. Not only canvas, threads and needles, but clay stoshape, cook and melt.
