Mark Cunningham (From No Wave Band\’s MARS) Live at Fanfulla
Mark Cunningham (New Jersey, 1952) started his musical career in the 1970\’s New York No Wave scene with one of its seminal groups, Mars, playing bass and guitar. In the \’80s he started working with trumpet and electronics in the NY improv and art club scenes and since 1991 has been based in Barcelona. Along the way he has participated in countless collaborations with fellow travellers such as Arto Lindsay, Christian Marclay, Rudolph Grey, Etant Donnes, Genesis P.Orridge, Pascal Comelade, Pierre Bastien, and Lydia Lunch, as well as leading his own bands Don King, Raeo, Convolution, Bèstia Ferida, and since 2014 – Blood Quartet. He is currently an artist in residence at Fabra i Coats Fabrica de Creaciòn in Barcelona and maintains several active free improv collaborations, including the trio Cunningham/Volt/Serra, duos with Dr. Truna, Jorgen Teller and Jakob Draminsky. and the Wild Cat Quartet, a spontaneous composition ensemble with Pierre Bastien, Dr Truna and Mike Cooper.
SOLO SHOWS – From the release of his first solo LP – Blood River Dusk – in 1997, until 2010 Mark appeared solo regularly with an evolving project called \”Blood Mysteries\”, developing the atmosphere and themes of the album using a backdrop of layered trumpet delays and drones , with set design and visuals by Silvia Mestres. A decade later, following the release of his 2020 solo album – \”Odd Songs\” and his LP recorded during the lockdown – \”Blue Mystery\” he\’s returned to a more intimate live format based on the new material – solo trumpet, guitar, effects and samplesaccompanied by Silvia\’s lush video stories and dreamscapes. Now a new album is in the works, Asombra7, but instead of the usual practice of recording and releasing an LP and then presenting it,Mark has decided to do shows first, to explore all the nuances gained from playing the material live before going into the studio.
The shows in November 2025 will open with a projection of “Odd Songs” – an experimental short film by Pol Penas on Mark’s career, followed by recently discovered and restored video footage of the no wave band Mars, filmed in 1978 at CBGB Theater in New York City.
